History of Reynolds Plantation

Reynolds Plantation is part of what was once known as "Cracker's Neck," a highly favored section of Greene County (named after Revolutionary War hero General Nathaniel Greene).

After a period of decline, approximately 7,000 acres of Cracker's Neck were reclaimed by Mercer Reynolds Sr., who built a hunting retreat named "Linger Longer." A Greene County native, Reynolds was a highly successful businessman and inventor, earning a patent for his process of solidifying cottonseed oil. Although he moved to Chattanooga in the 1920s, he maintained ties to the area, often returning to Linger Longer to hunt, fish and relax.

During this same period, James Madison Reynolds Sr., Mercer's cousin, was assembling land in the area for timber production. By the late 1930s the combined land holdings of the Reynolds family approximated 10,000 acres, which were left in a trust. In 1985, the trust was released to his grandchildren. The owners of Reynolds Plantation began working to determine the best use of the land that their family had owned for so many years. As development of Reynolds Plantation continues, members of the Reynolds family remain intensely mindful of the historical value of the land and the need to preserve, and enhance, its natural beauty and legacy.

The Reynolds Golf Academy is a state-of-the-art learning center inspired by the traditions of Atlanta golf and the legendary heritage of Augusta—both only an hour's drive away.

Adjacent to Rees Jones' much-lauded Oconee Course and the AAA Five Diamond Award-winning Ritz-Carlton Lodge, Reynolds Plantation, the Reynolds Golf Academy welcomes students to the 16-acre golfing campus.

Not everybody can win the Masters. For Charlie King, golf instruction is about helping golfers win their Masters, whatever that personal goal may be. It's a distinction that guides the veteran instructor and 16-year PGA of America member through the development of programming for Reynolds Golf Academy.

"Our New Rules philosophy means we don't make you look like a golfer, we turn you into a golfer," King explains. "This means we focus on the essential golf skills that great golfers have in common."

With 16 acres of practice tees, a multi-tiered pitching range, a one-of-a-kind short game area and a 6,550 ft2 Academy building that includes two enclosed hitting bays, video technology, six-camera MATT lab and classroom, Reynolds Golf Academy has the tools that lead to pinpoint feedback and noticeable improvement.

These facilities are where Charlie King's Essential of Golf™ programs take place. Charlie studied golf swings, short game, and course management. That's normal, all golf schools and instructors have done that. He studied motor learning principles, communication skills, physics as it relates to golf and kinesiology. It's is a little unusual to go to these lengths to make sure we have the knowledge to create the ultimate learning experience. But the biggest thing he did was focus his attention on how to make you, the golfer, successful.

Charlie looks at teaching golf the same way swimming and martial arts are taught. The process is not mysterious. You break the big skill down into its component skills, the Essentials. You evaluate the student's current skill level in each of these essential skills and determine which skill is most important to work on right now. The Oconee Course, the Rees Jones-designed resort course, presents a unique and formidable golfing challenge. Described by many as a “mind-game” golf course, the new Jones addition to the Reynolds Plantation landscape is designed to be a true risk/reward challenge - often forcing golfers to choose between direct tee shots over inlets of Lake Oconee and long drives down tree-lined dog-leg fairways. Noted for its spectacular par threes - featuring multiple tee boxes, drop shots from elevated tees and numerous water hazards - the course offers five holes in which Lake Oconee comes directly into play and for four others tendering magnificent lake views. The interior creeks and ponds and the expansive vistas of Lake Oconee provide spectacular scenery for Oconee Course golfers. Reynolds - National

Tom Fazio has created 27 holes at The National with drama as unique as the setting. The National features impressive elevations, breathtaking views and several holes skirting the shores of Lake Oconee. The layout runs throught dense forests of hardwoods, pines, flowering wild dogwoods and some of Lake Oconee's most dramatic lakefront terrain. Reynolds The Preserve

The Preserve Course at Reynolds Plantation was designed by noted architect Bob Cupp with U.S. Open Champions Fuzzy Zoeller and Hubert Green. A natural, rolling terrain characterizes this layout, which was ranked among the "Ten Best New Courses" by GOLF Magazine (2004), "America's Top Golf CoursesBest Places to Play" by Golf Digest (2006).

Reynolds - Great Waters

Reynolds Landing

Reynolds Landing (formerly Port Armor) was the first golf course built on popular Lake Oconee, setting the stage for a prime golf destination. Recognised as one of Georgia's best golf courses at its debut, second only to Augusta National, it features a variety of holes that wind through naturally wooded areas and rolling hills. Three holes wrap dramatically along the shoreline of the lake and the green settings and shot values make this one of the premium tests of golf on Lake Oconee.
