Local Area
Mount Juliet History
The Mount Juliet estate as we know it today was originally two separate estates, Walton’s Grove and Ballylinch Stud.
Walton’s Grove The Waltons were an ancient Norman family who owned Oldtown, the townland of Mount Juliet. They changed the name Oldtown to Walton's Grove. They were here for centuries, until Cromwell dispossessed William Walton in 1653. An unknown Cromwellian owned Walton's Grove for a short period, but after the Restoration it became the property of James, Duke of York, later James II. James sold it to a Mr Sweet, who in turn sold it to Mr Kendal in 1719. He changed the name to Kendal's Grove.
One stormy winter's night, "Old Mr Kendal" as he was known, was robbed by highwaymen and an important portfolio was taken. He begged the Rev Thomas Bushe to retrieve it for him. Rev Bushe duly caught the robbers and returned the portfolio. Old Mr Kendal was so overcome with gratitude that he left all his property, including Kendal's Grove, to Rev Bushe. Unfortunately, Rev Bushe was wildly extravagant and had to sell all his property to settle his debts. He sold Kendal's Grove to his neighbour, Somerset Hamilton Butler, 8th Viscount Ikerrin, 1st Earl of Carrick the Earl of Carrick. In 1757 The Earl of Carrick built Mount Juliet on this land.
The Earls of Carrick remained in Mount Juliet from the 1750s until 1914, when they sold the estate to the McCalmont family who lived there until recently. Operating as a luxury hotel since 1989, and as a Conrad Hotel since April 2002, a feeling of period opulence remains present here.
Ballylinch Stud was founded in 1914 by Major Dermot McCalmont as a base for his champion racehorse The Tetrarch. The stud is situated on 1,000 acres of exceptional land which has been farmed since the Middle Ages by the monks of the nearby Jerpoint Abbey and later by the Earls of Carrick.
The McCalmont family enjoyed great success at Ballylinch and developed several influential stallions including The Tetrarch, his son Tetratema, and later Fortino (the sire of Caro) and Sassafras.
In 1987, Ballylinch was purchased together with Mount Juliet by Killeen Investments.
The same standards of excellence have been applied to both Ballylinch and Mount Juliet, and facilities at Ballylinch are now world class and an exceptional band of broodmares has been assembled, including Priory Belle (winner of Moyglare Stud Stakes Group 1), River Keen, winner of the Jockey Club Gold Cup.
Fishing
The waters of the River Nore and the Kings River deliver the sort of yield that many anglers crave. Atlantic salmon and brown trout angling present a great opportunity for the many anglers who visit the estate to leave with a catch.
“This is game angling at its very best, with wild Atlantic salmon and brown trout angling guaranteeing an exhilarating experience.” Irish Times

The cross-country jumping clinic will help riders on their position and balance schooling over a variety of cross-country fences improving their ‘eye’ and recognizing and correcting common faults.
The 3 day hunting course which is held regularly in the hunting season – October to February allows the rider to take part in two days pre-hunting training with riding on Mount Juliet estate with instruction on jumping and cross-country followed by 1 day hunting.

Mount Juliet
Par: 72
Length: 7200 yards
Course designer: Jack Nicklaus
Venue: WGC - American Express Championship
|
The beautiful and challenging Mount Juliet course is a premier golfing venue in ireland. The course features rolling fairways, water hazards and contoured greens all superbly blended into the spectacular setting of this famous old Irish Estate. The 3rd hole is especially memorable, a stunning par-3 from an elevated tee to a green guarded by a stream and lake. The final hole, a long par-4 with water on the left and a narrow approach to the green.
|
Waterford Castle
Par: 72
Length: 6814 yards
Course designer: Des Smyth
|
The golf course at Waterford Castle is set on a 300-acre privately owned island, home of the world-renowned Waterford Castle Hotel, and was designed by former Ryder Cup player Des Smyth.
Despite being completely surrounded by water, Waterford Castle has an additional four internal water features on the second, third, fourth and sixteenth holes and can even boast its own version of the St Andrews Swilken Bridge!
The layout leads you through mature woodland and parkland. Rolling fairways and subtle contoured greens are blended into the great setting.
|
Faithlegg
Par: 72
Length: 6674 yards
Course designer: Paddy Merrigan
Venue: Euro Pro Tour
|
Opened in May 1993, on the banks of the River Suir, the Faithlegg course has been cleverly moulded into a landscape of mature trees, parkland and five lakes.
The layout involves testing doglegs, blind tee shots, and a testing challenge for even the most accomplished golfer. At a championship yardage of 6,674 and a regular yardage from the white markers of 6,284, distance is not the main feature. The greens at Faithlegg are finely manicured fast - often very fast in summer months, and difficult to read.
