From Mahebourg to Case Noyale, the South of Mauritius is a beautiful region that provides an array of unusual and awesome sights to satisfy your craving for discovery.

Adjacent to the Black River Gorges National Park, the Domaine de Bel Ombre is an ideal launching pad to discover Mauritius in all its authenticity.

You can also linger on the fine sandy beaches of Blue-Bay, Le Chaland or La Cambuse before letting yourself be bewitched by the more rugged landscape of cliffs in the Souillac region. In this village, you will come across La Nef, the former residence of the Mauritian poet, Robert Edward Hart, now turned into a museum. Other attractions include Rochester Falls and La Vanille Réserve des Mascareignes Nature Park.

The region is scattered with picturesque villages where life has long been intimately linked with the sugar industry. At the former plantation house of St Aubin, now open to visitors, you will be introduced to the rum distillation process. In the upper lands, the road winding through tea plantations takes you to the Bois-Chéri tea factory. Closer to the centre at Grand Bassin, a sacred lake for Hindus in Mauritius, you can admire a giant statue of Lord Shiva.

A stop in the village of Chamarel is a must to visit its Seven-Coloured Earth, majestic waterfall, tables d’hôte and rum factory. Without forgetting to taste the Café de Chamarel, a 100% Mauritian brew which grows in the village and is roasted a little further down in Case Noyale.
