Royal Cape Golf
|
Royal Cape is one of the best and most challenging courses to play both in the Western Cape. It is a historic course of championship stature which has hosted the SA Open ten times as well as many other professional and top amateur events.
Tree lined with narrow fairways and subtle USGA spec built greens, Royal presents a traditional test of golf, although the numerous ponds and lakes teeming with bird life provide beauty and distraction along the way.
Over more than 100 years the golf course at Royal Cape has evolved into what it is today, a classic parkland course that provides a fine test of golf as well as a wonderful playing experience.

Clovelly Golf Club
Length: 5893m
Course designer: Dr Charles Molteno Murray
|
Clovelly Golf is Nestled in the pristine and tranquil Silvermine Valley close to Fish Hoek in Constantia Cape Town.
Clovelly – like fine Cape wines – improves steadily with age, and its vintage and quality is well established throughout South Africa and internationally. This reputation is founded on the warmth of Clovelly’s “family” character, its outstanding facilities, and steps taken such as opening the Club to all irrespective of race, creed or gender, to ensure that Clovelly truly reflects the high ideal of its motto: “Fraternitas Ludorum”.
The Cape is the home of South African golf, and Clovelly ranks as one of the most picturesque and challenging courses in the Cape Peninsula.
Famous for its rolling, computer-irrigated fairways and undulating holes, Clovelly complements its rich coastal environment. Natural sand dunes abut the course, which is blessed with water features and a wide variety of indigenous fauna – especially birdlife such as guinea fowl, pheasant, peacock and steppe buzzard – and flora, notably the variety of trees which line the fairways.
Unlike some other local courses, there is no noise intrusion from roads or railways, and both course and club house enjoy privacy and security.
A favourite course of Bobby Locke, each hole has a special distinctive setting, with magnificent views of the surrounding mountains and False Bay.

Steenberg Golf
Par: 72
Length: 5875m
Course designer: Peter Matkovich
|
Steenberg is a place of textured heritage, vintage wines and world-class golfing. The Steenberg golf course is rated as one of the top three courses to visit in South Africa, while the Estate itself has earned global recognition as a flagship residential address.
When the original Steenberg Developers broke ground in 1994 they had a vision in mind to create the premier golf estate in the country. For most, this vision was hard to comprehend and to visualise the transformation of a working farm filled with wetlands into a golf estate must have been impossible. However, Steenberg Golf Estate’s reputation as the premier golf estate in South Africa and one of the finest golfing experiences in the world has exceeded even the developer’s expectations. The Steenberg Golf Club officially opened in 1996.
In addition to exceptional golfing, Steenberg also offers visitors a range of other signature experiences. Sample some of Steenberg’s award-winning wines at the estate winery, or experience fine dining in exquisite surrounds at Catharina’s Restaurant. The main avenue of the Estate, Catharina Avenue, was named in memory of this colourful character. Other attractions include a luxury spa, 5-star hotel, exclusive Club House and a collection of original artworks by the likes of Cecil Skotnes and Edoardo Villa, both highly respected South African artists.
"I love Steenberg. I can play the course everyday, surely that is the hallmark of a great golf course. The different seasons and the wind continually changes the beauty, challenges and options of each hole. This offers a lovely variety and makes it simply most enjoyable and fun to play”. Peter Matkovich

Paarl Golf
|
One of the members at that time recalled a rather amusing story. “Residents of Van der Poel’s Plein complained that golf was a dangerous game. Bohlmann and Steven were sent down as representatives of the club to meet the Municipality to demonstrate that Golf was indeed a harmless game. Bohlmann proceeded to demonstrate, but unfortunately hit a ball with such vigour that it nearly ‘demolished’ a young girl who was passing by. The Municipal Council, subsequently decided that Golf was ‘dangerous’ and arranged to lease the Club property at Sanddrift.”
The Club continued to carry on its ‘dangerous game’ of golf in natural surroundings that were an inspiration to the players. The Paarl Golf Club was subsequently officially founded in September 1908 under presidency of Lord de Villiers, with a nine-hole course laid out along the Berg River at Sanddrift. The clubhouse was up-to-date with every modern convenience, including a telephone and electric lights.
The Paarl Golf Club, with its 28 men and 16 lady members, was affiliated to the WPGU when the South African Golfing Union (SAGU) and the Western Province Golfing Union (WPGU) were founded in 1910. Matches were played against other clubs, such as the Cape Town Metropolitan Golf Club and Royal Cape. The match against Royal Cape is still played today.
Tommie Hall, Alf Devine, Heinrich de Villiers, Dr. Frank Bester, F. Wallem, and A. Bohlmann, were some of the outstanding players, with Piet Joubert, who won the Western Province Country Championship. The Paarl Golf Club regularly entered the Spilhaus Trophy, Kruger Cup, Devine Cup and Retief Cup. In 1924 the Club succeeded in winning the Spilhaus Cup and the Country Kruger Cup.
The Paarl Annual Golf Ball was usually a huge affair and was rated an outstanding feature on the social calendar. The Paarl Golf club was later affiliated with the Boland Golf Sub-Union and played matches against many Boland clubs, and today has an annual match against Stellenbosch Golf Club.
In time the 9 hole course became inadequate, and in 1955 the club made a decision to move to Suider-Paarl, where an 18 hole course and an impressive clubhouse was built on a site between the Berg River and Wateruintjiesvlei. The new property has magnificent views of the surrounding mountains, with snow visible in the splendid clear winter months. Again the municipality assisted by clearing the river banks and granting a loan for the building of the ‘second’ clubhouse.
In 1965 the golf club ran into financial difficulties; and in order to resolve this predicament it launched a fund raising project by offering life membership at R200 with target of R10 000. The target was easily reached with the subsequent survival of the club.
In 1983 the records show that the golf club had grown to a membership 423 adult members, to become the first club in the Western Province to organise sponsored tournaments, which were to form an important source of revenue.
The annual Winelands Classic, which has been held in October since 1979, is one of South Africa’s major amateur golfing events. It is significant source of revenue and one of the club’s foremost public relations undertakings. In addition, the Champagne Classic for mixed four balls played during the Winelands week has grown in popularity.
The development of the Boschenmeer Estate, which incorporated the grounds of the Paarl Golf Club, took place in 1997 and changed the face of the Paarl Golf Club radically. The redevelopment created a further nine holes which became the Boschenmeer Nine, which resulted in the Western Cape’s first 27 hole golf club.
The 27 holes are made up as follows:
1 – 9 The River Nine
10 – 18 The Paarl Nine
19 – 27 The Boschenmeer Nine
In 2004 the new clubhouse was officially opened.

Pearl Valley has two signature holes, 4th and 13th, both offering majestic views of the surrounding mountains and lakes. The 4th hole is as challenging, with limited margin for error as you need to cross the creek three times en route to a tricky green. This par 5 is regularly listed as one of the best par 5’s in South Africa, epitomising the ideals of ‘risk and reward’. The 13th hole is a daunting par 3.
However the Pearl Valley experience is far more than the exquisite greens and fairways. An award winning combination of golfing luxury and natural beauty awaits you from the time you arrive. Your unforgettable experience begins with a professional welcome at The Golf Shop followed by the opportunity to change in the luxury locker rooms whilst your clubs are taken to your cart. A gentle warm-up on some of the best practice facilities in the country and your lifelong memorable experience can commence.
A Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course is the highest tier of design offering from Nicklaus Design, the world leader in golf course design. The Golden Bear designed and constructed Pearl Valley’s championship course. In 2003 he opened it, commenting, “Surrounded by mountains this is one of the most spectacular settings in which I have designed a golf course.” In the world of golf it is simply not possible to receive a greater endorsement.
