Culture and Heritage

The area is steeped in history, from the Khoisan art of the Cango Caves which dates back 10,000 years, to the splendid Ostrich Palaces of Oudtshoorn's feather boom and the Outeniqua Transport Museum in George, just an hour's drive from Knysna. A number of historic churches in the area are worth a visit. Just 10 minutes from Knysna, in the suburb of Belvidere is the Holy Trinity Church, a beautiful example of 12th Century Norman architecture.

Extreme Sports

Adrenaline seekers will not be disappointed with a trip to the Garden Route. Descend into the ocean in a steel cage for an afternoon of shark cage diving where you can get up close and personal with Great White Sharks at Mossel Bay, only 80km from the Resort. If you dare, take the jump from Bloukrans Bridge - the world's highest commercial bungee jump, less than an hour's drive from Knysna.

A tree top canopy tour in the magnificent Tsitsikamma Forest near Storms River, about 2 hours from Knysna, involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to 30 metres above the forest floor, while admiring the spectacular scenery. The Cango Caves, just two hour's drive from Knysna and 28 km from Oudtshoorn, are an intricate maze of vast chambers and tunnels hewn from the limestone landscape. More than 20 million years old, this National Monument is one of the top 10 most visited South African Attractions.

The Garden Route provides many opportunities for visitors to see wildlife in their natural habitat as well as a number of animal sanctuaries and parks. Monkeyland, Knysna Elephant Park and Birds of Eden, all within 20 km of Knysna, are unique sanctuaries where animals and birds are bred in captivity.

Two game lodges close to Pezula have rhino, leopard, giraffe, zebra, buffalo and kudu flourishing in their natural habitat.

The wildlife of the Indian Ocean including dolphins, whales, Cape fur seals and numerous sea birds can be observed up close on sea-kayaks, motors boats and yachts.

Walks, hikes and trails along the coast or in the indigenous forests provide endless opportunities to enjoy the fauna and flora of the region, including many rare and protected species.

The breathtaking, award-winning 18-hole golf course offers golfers the ultimate golf course in Knysna, an unsurpassed golf experience, and one of the most scenic golf courses in the world. The Pezula Golf Club offers Clubhouse facilities that are in keeping with the overall five-star experience, and includes a terrace with spectacular views, restaurant, bar, golf shop, short game practice area and putting green.

Simola Golf

The magnificence of the landscape at Simola inspired golfing legend Jack Nicklaus to design a masterpiece amidst the rolling hills at Kysna, South Africa. Forest, mountain and river are seen from an undulating valley and the panorama expands to uninterrupted overviews of the Knysna Lagoon and the famous Knysna Heads leading to the Ocean. The golfer will be distracted by this awesome beauty, but there is much to concentrate on as Nicklaus has maximised the use of the hilly terrain to create an undulating, meandering golf challenge regarded as one of the most favoured among the abundant golf visitors to this area. The first seven valley holes have those magnificent views of the Knysna River, while the 11 holes on the opposing side of the ridge have a sense of space due to the uninterrupted panorama of the surrounding area, which includes the Knysna Heads, lagoon and mountains. Immaculate Kikuyu fairways are punctuated with excellent Bent Grass, many of which are smaller than expected of a modern course, but which are strategically designed to challenge the golfer to choose the right approach to them to maximise scoring chances. Carts are compulsory and are included in the green fee.
