The Penha Longa's historic and unique landmarks

Penha Longa means literally long rock.
The history of Penha Longa is inextricably linked with the history of Portugal. Founded by Friar Vasco Martins in 1355, the historic church at Penha Longa was built in 1390 and then was followed by the creation of a palace a decade later.

Penha Longa’s Palace was used by the Portuguese Royal family during the 15th and 16th centuries – escaping the heat of the city to the shade and comfort of Sintra. Penha Longa was the host to the first European visit by a Japanese delegation in 1584.

Cascais - A stylish summer resort town, twenty minutes from Penha Longa, Cascais was a humble fishing village before becoming a royal retreat in the 19th century and an enclave for a crop of exiled monarchs – the Duke of Windsor for one – in the 20th century. Colourful fishing boats still moor alongside stylish cruise liners although the clientele is more international jet set interspersed by a clutch of English expats.

Estoril – Just down the road from Cascais, lies Estoril, a former spa town and fashionable seaside resort, made famous in the 1930s by its Grand Prix track, its international casino (currently Europe’s largest) and glitzy hotels. Ian Fleming set his first Bond novel, Casino Royale, here and another Bond epic – On Her Majesty’s Secret Service was also filmed here.

Sintra – The region of Sintra is one of the most beautiful in Portugal – a picturesque Eden with breathtaking views over the coastline, leading nineteenth century poets to describe it as “a garden of the earthly paradise”. It has been recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

Lisbon – Located just a thirty minute drive from Penha Longa Resort, Lisbon has been the capital of Portugal since the mid-thirteenth century. It lies on the right bank of the Tagus river, is built on seven hills and is located in a region that offers a rich landscape diversity.

Arola Restaurant

Innovative, fashionable and defiantly cool, Arola is relaxed and chilled. A disciple of Ferrán Adrià of Barcelona with whom he worked for eight years, Sergi Arola’s (2 Michelin Stars) twin passions are music and food and he enjoys a rare culinary pedigree.

Arola’s menus offer a creative and contemporary twist to Portuguese cuisine, mixing tradition and heritage with his inimitable modern approach. Like his mentor, Arola seeks to give diners unexpected contrasts of flavour and texture with the ultimate aim of provoking, surprising and delighting his guests. Food will be available through the day and during dinner Arola’s take on the Portuguese tapas will vie with more complicated main courses. Wines will be served from a transparent cellar, situated mid-restaurant.

Midori Restaurant

Chefs trained in Japan prepare a wide variety of traditional specialities in honour of the four Japanese Princes who visited Penha Longa on their first voyage of diplomacy to Europe in the late 16th century.

Delicacies ranging from sushi to tenpura and teppan yaki are prepared at live cooking venues. Booking is essential for both a la carte days and for the Teppan Yaki Buffet.

Every Wednesday in Midori restaurant, the Sushi Lovers Buffet presents you a variety of sushi and sashimi conceived by our renowned. Starting 50 Euros (included with Half Board).

Every Saturday Midori Buffet. The Midori classic buffet will allow guests to enjoy the best of Japanese menu tasting out of Japan. Starting 55 Euros per person (included with Half Board).

Six Senses Spa at Penha Longa is a 1500sq m facility situated just a few minutes walk from the main hotel building and offering a wide range of the most sophisticated therapies and treatments.

The Spa includes nine treatment rooms, including a suite reserved for those who prefer more privacy, and two relaxing areas. Within the stunning gardens you will find a Jacuzzi, a contrast pool and waterfall, a platform over the pool for the practice of Yoga, Qi-Cong and two gazebos for meditation and treatments such as Shiatsu.

Penha Longa - Atlantic

Par: 72 Length: 6290m Course designer: Robert Trent Jones Jnr Venue: European Challenge Tour - Estoril Challenge

The famous golf architect Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed the renowned Atlantic course at Penha Longa which is as much a physical challenge because of the landscape, as it is pleasing on the eye, for the same reason. The land is also steeped in history, with a Palace, a church and the Fountain of Tears all situated on the estate formerly owned by the Count of Penha Longa. This is no ordinary track!

Oitavos

Par: 72 Length: 6303m Course designer: Arthur Hills Venue: PGA European Tour - Portuguese Open

Located in Cascais just 1km from Quinta da Marinha Hotel, close to the Guincho beach and surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, Oitavos is one course not to be missed on the Costa Lisboa. Oitavos gives an old Scottish links feel with nine out and nine back layout. The early holes are in a wooded area then the course opens up a little and its style becomes more that of a traditional links. The quality of the layout is immediately apparent. The course hosted the PGA European Tour Portuguese Open in 2005 with Paul Broadhurst lifting the trophy.

West Cliffs

Par: 72 Length: 6380m

The architect responsible for West Cliffs was William (Rocky) Roquemore, and his particular mark is evident in the fairly small bunkers which are strategically placed along the fairways up to the greens. The par three 17th is the signature hole, with a long bunker on the left and a lake on the right, requiring a very precise tee shot to complete your round safely!

Comporta Dunas Golf Links

Just one hour south of Lisbon, situated in a secluded coastal setting on the edge of the Sado Estuary Nature Reserve, The Dunas Course is the first of two 18-hole championship layouts at Terras da Comporta. Created over 84 hectares of natural, sandy terrain the par-71 course, is a true links, unique in Portugal, expertly designed and manicured to provide a world-class golfing experience. The links-style layout is the first to be designed in mainland Europe by acclaimed golf architect David McLay-Kidd, whose other famous golf creations include Bandon Dunes, Queenwood, Beaverbrook, Machrihanish Dunes and the Castle Course at St. Andrews.
